Former Nigeria defender Tajudeen Disu is delighted to have been made an ambassador of the MKO Abiola Memorial Cup, a tournament organised by the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria featuring U18 teams from the various states of the Federation.
Expressing his excitement during a chat with globalsportsng.com on Thursday, the technical director of the Lagos State Football Association said the appointment brings back memories of the benevolence of the late MKO Abiola, who gave him a scholarship to study Agriculture and Economics at Alabama State University in the United States of America.
He also hinged the appointment on his long-time involvement with YSFON, where he made a name for himself, winning a string of local and international titles in the 1980s.
He said, "I am overjoyed to be made an ambassador for the MKO Abiola Memorial Cup, and I am using this opportunity to thank the Chairman, YSFON, Ogun State Chapter, Waheed Lawal, for this singular honour.
"I consider it an honour because it gives me another opportunity to immortalise the late MKO Abiola for his role in my career upliftment. He gave me a scholarship to study Agriculture and Economics at Alabama State University in the USA. That gesture opened the door for some of my YSFON team-mates, whom I helped secure scholarships at American universities. Those who benefited from this scheme initiated by Abiola are Tosin Adebambo, Wasiu Adebayo, Victor Ogunsanya, Emmanuel Akpan, Hakeem Disu, Wasiu Disu, the late Ganiyu Akanni, the late Ifeanyi Edemba, Dennis Echechu, Charles Ogunniyi, Hakeem Ishola, Seuin Aiyegbaroju, Seun Roberts, the late Pius Oleh, and several others.
Having represented Lagos State in various YSFON competitions and serving as the Chairman of YSFON in Ogun State before relocating to Lagos to occupy the same position, Disu can be aptly termed a typical symbol of YSFON.
Some of the trophies he won with YSFON include the Gothia Cup in Sweden, the Dallas Cup in Texas, USA, the Gian Cup in Norway, the Danish Cup, and the Brazilian State Cup.
