SPURS LOSE AT HOME TO VILLA, FAIL TO RETURN TO TOP FOUR MARK

By Sakiru Olopade

Antonio Conte's tutored side, Tottenham Hotspurs failed in their bid to return to the top four mark on the English Premier League log after losing at Tottenham stadium to Emery's Aston Villa tutored side by  two goals to nothing.

A win over Villa would have seen them climbing back into top four above Manchester United that waved aside Wolves on Saturday by a lone goal.

In a lacklustre encounter, that saw both teams struggled to create clear cut chance, with no shot on target for better part of the first half.

However, barely five minutes in the second half, the visitors took the lead after Luiz's  long range shot caught goalkeeper Hugo Lloris napping, given room for lurking Ollie Watkins to send a clinical pass to Emiliano Buendia to slot home the ball for the first goal.

The Spurs , took the game to the visitors half, looking for the needed equalizer but the Villa defense was water tight for the Spurs to penetrate.

In the 73rd minute , Douglas Luiz made it two goals for the Villa after putting the ball beyond Hugo Lloris.

Antonio Conte's spirited efforts to redeem their image with many late substitutions were in vain as Villa held on to the two goals lead.

The Tottenham Hotspurs fans could not hide their feelings over their team defeat by booing them in total disappointment and dissatisfaction as the referee signalled the end of the encounter.

Earlier on Saturday, there were a lot of surprises, Manchester City , playing at home surrendered a lone goal lead to Everton to end the encounter in a one goal apiece, the result gave Arsenal seven points clear lead at the top of the league table.

The Mikel Arteta's  side was in a sparkling form, beaten Brighton Hoves  and Albion by four goals to two , to sit comfortably on top of the English Premier League leader.

In the meantime, Chelsea top four ambition suffered a set back with a score draw against Nottingham Forest that was equally battling to escape  relegation .
