Sagamu, Ogun State South West Nigeria has described the death of the two time Olympian late Benedict Majekodunmi as rude shock to sporting family in Nigeria at large.
Chief Abijo who double as chairman Able Athletics Association and Patron Deaf Athletics Association in Ogun State.
Chef Abijo who spoke to Ogun City News from his based in United Kingdom emphasised the Ogun State Sports Council and whole Nigeria sporting family has lost a passionate sportsman.
To him " Majek contributed immensely to the growth and development of Athletics particularly in Ogun State and Nigeria in general he dominated the local scene in the sprints especially in the 70s. He represented the nation at the 9th Common Wealth Games, in 1970 at Edinburgh Scotland, where I made me memorable impact of especially in the sprints ".
Also, won 100m event during the maiden edition of National Sports Festival tagged LAGOS '73. However in 1974 at the 10th Common Wealth Games Christchurch, New Zealand, he was part of the 4×100m Bronze Medal winning quartets of Oyebami T, Alani Olakunle, and Kolawole Abdullahi. Then the team return 39.70 Sec. He represented Nigeria at the Mexico City Olympics 1968, where he shown brightly like a Northern Star especially again in 100mvand 4×100m relay events. He builts on the outstanding performances at the 1972 Olympics in the defunct Western Germany where he was made the Athletics captain, and did Nigeria proud in the usual 100m, 200m as well as the relay.
LATE BENEDICT MAJEKODUNMI AS A COACH
Chief Abijo described Coach Majek as talent discovery he produced such great Ex- International like Alani Olakunle, Samson Oyeledun, Lateef Onasanya, Lawrence Adegbehingbe, Adetunji Onatolu, Ojuola Olaniran, Alaba Ojumoola and host of others.
Coach Benedict Majekodunmi retired in 1984 as the Chief Athletics Coach of Ogun State Sports Council also handled couple of national assignment.
Benedict Majekodunmi as known as "BABA MAJEK" died on Sunday 1st January, 2023 after brief illness on his return from the cross- over night church services in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital. He was buried on Monday, 2nd January, 2023.
Chief Abijo prays May Almighty God gives his fortitude to bear the loss. May God bless his sporting soul.
