Tajudeen Disu, a former Nigeria international, has urged the Federal Government to disband the Nigeria Football Federation board and appoint a caretaker committee to run Nigerian football affairs if elections to the NFF board do not take place in September.
Disu, who is the Chairman of Players Welfare of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, made this suggestion against the backdrop of leaked plans by the Amaju Pinnick-led Board to move the election to January 2023 in its desperation to remain in office longer than the laws permit.
“The Amaju Pinnick-led NFF Board has sent a letter to FIFA for postponement of the election, but it won’t work. The Federal Government should not allow it. He knows that the government will be busy for the coming presidential election. It’s a plan to stay in office for another four years,” Disu told globalsportsng.com.
He continued: “The Federal Government should be ready to disband the NFF in September and appoint a Caretaker Committee to run Nigerian football if the NFF refuses to hold elections in September.
“The NFF Congress should be ready to hold their Congress and pass a vote of no confidence on him and remove him from office.”
In a viral letter signed by General Secretary, Muhhamed Sanusi and sent to FIFA on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, the Pinnick-led NFF board asked the world football body to allow it to stage the election in January, thereby arbitrarily extending the tenure of Pinnick, who was re-elected for a second term on September 21, 2019, which acording to statute expires on September 20.
Significantly, the letter was reportedly already sent to FIFA before the NFF topshots informed the board members via an online platform of the federation, a development seriously frowned on by a majority of board members.
After repeatedly asserting he would step down from the saddle in September, Pinnick on Thursday hinted at plans to continue in office, pinning his decision on calls by some “influential Nigerians” to run for a third term. His plan is to read the FIFA response at the AGA, which is expected to take place next week.
