Awoniyi Delights In His Historic First EPL Goal In Nottingham Forest Win

Taiwo Awoniyi is over the clouds after opening his Premier League account in 1-0 win over West Ham United at The City Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Playing his second match since joining the newly promoted club in June, the Nigeria international striker found the back of the net three minutes into added time of the half to help Nottingham Forest secure their first Premier League win since 1999.

Toffolo had gone on a surging run into the penalty before finding Lingard, whose mis-hit shot fell for Awoniyi via a ricochet to convert the loose ball from close range and scored the club’s first Premier League goal at The City Ground since Chris Bart-Williams’ winner against Leicester City in May 1999.

Hours after making history with the side, the U17 World Cup winner took to his Instagram page to celebrate the feat in a statement alongside pictures of the match, including the attached two, which show him celebrating the historic goal with some of his team-mates.

“What an honor it was to open my Premier League scoring account in a historical moment for this great club! Amazing spirit from the boys backed by the best fans! Glory to God and we go again! when I have you, I have everything #God,” stated Awoniyi, who was replaced by Sam Surridge on 72 minutes.

The 25-year-old former Liverpool player joined Nottingham Forest on June 25, 2022, on a five-year deal for a club record for Forest, reportedly £17 million. He made his Premier League debut on August 6, 2022 as a substitute against Newcastle United at St James Park.

Before moving to Nottingham Forest, Awoniyi made 31 league appearances in total at Union Berlin last season, scoring 15 goals and providing one assist.
